Dec 26, 2017

The 2017 Slam Dunk to the Beach high school basketball tournament tips off Wednesday morning in Lewes.

The three-day tourney at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes features some of the nation’s most highly recruited players, as well as some of the First State’s top teams.

It begins with defending state champ Smyrna dueling Wilmington’s Howard High at noon Wednesday.  Smyrna is 6-0 this year and ranked number one in Delaware.  The Eagles have won their last 24 games.

6th ranked Caravel  also hits the hardwood Wednesday, meeting Maryland’s St. James School at 3 p.m. The Bucs are 2-1 to open the season.

Since the Delaware Sports Commission revived the tourney in 2014,  Slam Dunk to the Beach has drawn well over 30,000 fans and contributed $3 million to the local economy.

In all, 20 teams will play 19 games during Slam Dunk’s three-day run in Lewes this week.
