Arbor Day Poster Contest underway for K-5 students

Delaware Forest Service
The Delaware Forest Service is accepting entries for its annual Arbor Day Poster Contest.

Trees are Terrific...and Perfect for Pollinators. That’s the theme for this year’s statewide K thru 5 Arbor Day Poster Contest.

Delaware Forest Service trainer and educator Ashley Melvin says the contest seeks to teach students the important role trees play in keeping both people and pollinators - such as bees - healthy.

“The theme of the contest rotates on an annual basis. It’s always Trees are Terrific and then the suffix of that theme changes to introduce new topics or things that are current in the area. And one of the things that are very current in Delaware and across the nation, are the plight regarding our pollinators,” said Melvin.

Melvin says in addition to learning through creating their posters - students participating will also get a chance to do some hands-on learning if they’d like - by planting a tree.

“So we do ask that groups pre-register in order to participate in the contest. But when they do register,  what will happen is they will be eligible to receive free loblolly pine seedlings,” said Melvin.

In Delaware, Arbor Day is the last Friday in April - April 27th this year.

Judging will take place at the Delaware Department of Agriculture in Dover and winners will be announced in early April.  Winning student posters will receive  prizes - including $25 dollar gift cards and a ceremonial tree planting held at their school.
