Blunt Rochester takes oath, makes history

The first African American woman to represent Delaware in Congress was sworn into the US House of Representatives Tuesday.

And Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester will face her first political test as soon as Wednesday, when House Republicans are expected to begin their efforts to repeal Obamacare.

Blunt Rochester said on CNN's State of the Union Sunday, she’ll work across party lines to fix Obamacare rather than repeal it.

“My hope in this new Congress is that we can find ways to come together and find the best ways to keep having quality coverage but deal with the costs,” Blunt Rochester said.

Blunt Rochester called Obamacare a landmark achievement, citing the benefits it has provided for thousands of Delawareans.

Republicans, including President-elect Donald Trump, have expressed support for parts of the law, which could signal a possible compromise.

Blunt Rochester has made history as both the first woman and the first African American person to represent the state in Congress.

She was sworn into the 115th US Congress with 58 other freshmen lawmakers Tuesday.
