Madison Brengle’s breakout 2015 season on the pro tennis tour was rewarded by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcaster Association.
The state’s sports media named the 25-year-old Dover native its 2015 Delaware Athlete of the Year.
Brengle, who’s played professionally since 2005, finished 2015 ranked 40th in the world – her first season-ending top 40 ranking. She also earned over $600,000 and reached the fourth round of Australian Open and the third round of the U.S. Open.
And Brengle is already off to a great start in 2016. She reached the third round of this year’s Australian Open and yesterday knocked off the world’s number 31 player Ekaterina Makarova in opening round of the Dubai Championships.
The Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters also named Division I state football champ Smyrna High is Team of the Year and Cape Henlopen field hockey coach Kate Windett-Austin its Coach of the Year. Austin has led Cape to four state titles on her four years as head coach.
