The state and Christina School District are moving forward with a Memorandum of Understanding that calls for consolidating the district’s five Wilmington schools into two.
The Christina School Board voted 4-2 Tuesday night to approve the agreement, which will create two kindergarten through 8th grade schools at what are now Bancroft Elementary and Bayard Middle schools. The new configuration is slated to be in place for the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
Stubbs Elementary will be turned into a Dual Generation Center offering early childhood education, along adult education opportunities - including job training, GED preparation and financial education.
What the district will do with the other buildings will be determined later.
In a statement, Gov. John Carney tanked the Christina Board for approving the deal, calling it just a first step, but an important first step. He added the state is committed to this effort “for the long haul.”
