City Theater Company brings back MTV hits

City Theater Company

The City Theater Company wants people to break out the parachute pants and Crystal Pepsi to celebrate ‘80s music to open its 2016-2017 season.

City Theater Company Music Director Joe Trainor says hits from Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Run DMC and more will be performed live by a full band.

"It’s nostalgia… it’s basically a two and a half hour sing along for people who grew up in that era. We’re encouraging everyone to get into the spirit of it by dressing up in your ‘80s garb," Trainor said.

He said the theater wants to bring people back to their MTV roots.

"Most everybody remembers the '80s or remembers songs from the 80s and it would be kind of fun to revisit that material in a live setting,"

Following the kickoff event, the company opens its theatrical season with a production of La Cage Aux Folles in December. That will be followed by the play After Birth of a Nation in February and rock opera Lizzie in April.

Founded in 1993, The City Theater Company performs contemporary comedies and classic musicals on the Wilmington Waterfront.

The '80s kick off event opens Oct. 22.
