Classic courtroom drama comes to Dover

Kent County Theatre Guild

A production 12 Angry Men is coming to the Kent County Theatre Guild this weekend.

You won’t see Henry Fonda walk across the stage, but Director Patti Gatto said local actors give the classic filmnew life in Dover.

She said the large production wouldn’t be possible without people lending their talents and more.

"It’s all volunteer, from the people who sell the tickets to the people who run the bar to the people who take out the trash, [it’s] all volunteer,” Gatto said.

Gatto estimated a crew of at least 30 will bring the 1957 Sidney Lumet film to the stage.

The story revolves around a single dissenting juror in a murder trial who slowly convinces his peers that the case is not as clear cut as they might think.

The Theatre decided to add a 13th actor to the mix, the Guard, who’s usually heard from off stage.

The volunteer-run Theatre Guild has come a long way since it opened in the 1950’s

“They would do their shows in any house in which they could get the space, the Wells Theater, Caesar Rodney, Central Middle School, it was just a kind of vagabond moving thing,” Gatto said.

In the 1960’s the Theater Guild secured its permanent home in Dover.

12 Angry Men is the first production of the fall season for the Theatre Guild. It runs through Sept. 25.
