Congressional delegation holds job fair for vets

Delaware’s Congressional delegation will hold two more job fairs for veterans this year.

The next fair for Delaware veterans is Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wilmington University’s Dover Campus. Another is planned for Friday, September 15, also from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Middletown Fire Hall.

Both Fairs are free and no registration is required for attendees. Nearly 30 employers are scheduled to be at Tuesday’s event in Dover.

According to Sen. Tom Carper’s (D-Delaware) office, Delaware’s Congressional delegation has hosted more than 35 general job fairs, including 10 for veterans. Tuesday’s will be the 11th job fair specifically for veterans.

Last year, 80 vets came out to two veteran job fairs.

The job fairs come at an opportune time, since Delaware’s jobless rate is head up again. After holding steady at 4.7% in May and June, jobless rate ticked up, reaching 4.8% in July.

Delaware is one of nine states where the unemployment rate is currently higher than it was at the end of last year, and one of 20 states where it’s higher than the national average.
