Crowded roadways expected for Memorial Day

Delaware Public Media

Traffic in the First State could be up nearly 3 percent this Memorial Day weekend, according to a report from AAA Mid-Atlantic.

More than 109,000 Delawareans are expected to drive or fly at least 50 miles this holiday weekend.

"We’re seeing gas prices remain about the same as they were last year, somewhere in the same ball park. The weather is nice, the economy seems to be going fairly steady. So we’re expecting a lot of travelers on the road this weekend," AAA Mid-Atlantic's Ken Grant said.

The bulk of travelers, more than 97,000, are expected to be on the roads. Grant advises to check tire pressure, oil levels and  car batteries before heading out.

Another thing to expect: slowdowns on roadways.

"Count on it. With an extra 100,000 people on the roads you can expect a few delays here and there," Grant said.

With about 10 percent of Delaware’s population expected to drive during the four-day weekend you could see some stop and go traffic - so build in some extra travel time.
