DDOA announces writers retreat

Delaware Division of the Arts

The Delaware Division of the Arts has announced its biennial poetry and prose retreat.

The DDOA says the four-day event in Rehoboth Beach is a way for writers to get time away and focus on their craft.

DDOA Program Officer Roxanne Stanulis said the workshop is for both emerging and established Delaware writers.

"This is geared toward people who have some experience writing. We also encourage our past retreat participants to apply as well. We’re trying to get a balance of new people and old people so everyone can learn from each other," Stanulis said.

She adds writers will have access to beachfront cabins to sit, write and take in the scenery.

“They’re located on the water. In November it should be pretty quiet, so there won’t be a lot of distractions. So people can really focus on their writing during the day,” said Stanulis.

The application process is usually fairly competitive, Stanulis said, with 11 spots each given to prose and poetry writers. Poets are asked to submit 10 poems for consideration, while prose writers submit 10 pages of original work. Many writers go on to receive grants from the DDOA, Stanulis said.

DDOA keynote speakers H.G Carillo and Diana Goetsch are scheduled to lead workshops.

Applications are due June 20th.The event takes place this November.
