Delaware Art Museum celebrates Chinese New Year

Delaware Art Museum

Jan. 28 marks the start of the Chinese Year of the Rooster. Delaware Art Museum is marking the new year with Chinese art activities and artist demonstrations.

The event includes folk dance performances from the Chinese American Community Center.

Artwork created by students from the Chinese School of Delaware will be on view to celebrate, along with a scavenger hunt through the museums galleries.

"We put together a scavenger hunt every year to introduce our collection through the lens of Chinese culture. Typically we look for dragons, roosters that kind of thing in the galleries to celebrate this day," Family and Community Programs Manager Ameilia Wiggins said.

Families will get a chance to stretch their creative muscles through Chinese origami and calligraphy workshops.

Representatives from the Hanlin Chinese Culture Association will talk about the history of Chinese New Year.

"They’ll definitely be helping introduce this culture to our visitors," Wiggins said.

The Chinese New Year celebration is Feb. 11 at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington.

Delaware Public Media' s arts coverage is made possible, in part, by support from theDelaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
