Delaware Art Museum names new exec. director

Delaware Art Museum

The Delaware Art Museum has a new executive director.

The museum’s board of trustees announced Wednesday the appointment of Sam Sweet as the new Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer.

He’ll assume that role July 1.

Sweet currently teaches in George Mason University's Masters in Arts Management program and owns a consulting practice that aids nonprofits in building organizational capacity.

He joins the Delaware Art Museum at a time of resurgence. The Museum experienced 14 percent growth in attendance and a 30 percent increase in the number of donors between 2014 and 2015.    That came after the museum was sanctioned in 2014 by a pair of arts organizations for its decision to sell off pieces of art to retire its debt.

Sweet has a track record of leading arts organizations through times of transformative change. As executive director at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., he raised funds to eliminate the organization's building debt while launching a number of critically-acclaimed music and theatre programs.

This piece is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
