Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts unveils new name and mission

Delaware Center for the Arts will become The Delaware Contemporary

The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts is rebranding.

The 33,000 square foot institution in Wilmington is now positioning itself as The Delaware Contemporary.

While still an art center, the museum’s mission will expand to include a variety of creative disciplines.

But Executive Director John Shipman says that doesn't mean the museum plans to minimize the visual arts.

“We have seven beautiful galleries in that space,” he notes. “We have twenty-six studio artists right directly on site so there’s no way that the  Delaware Contemporary could not be focused on the visual arts. It's not a shift over to design and technology, it's an inclusion of design and technology.”

The museum’s board began developing their new strategic plan over a year ago.

Shipman adds the institution will become more interactive.

“We’ll have more symposiums, more talks and more workshops that will have this broader understanding of what creativity is. The artists, designers, coders and hackers that we’ll be working with will bring a bunch of different types of media to fore, with a broader understanding of what creativity is.”

The Delaware Contemporary will unveil a new branding campaign in the coming months to include a new logo, website and signage.

This piece is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
