Delaware Forest Service gives grants to help fight wildfires

The Delaware Forest Service is giving grant money to volunteer fire companies statewide to help fight wildfires.

The DFS says up to $4,500 is available to volunteer fire companies to improve their readiness in emergency situations.

Forestry Administrator Michael Valenti said often times volunteer companies are the first responders and this grant funding can go a long way.

"The grants are set up so that volunteer companies can add to their wildland firefighting capabilities through equipment," Valenti said.

Valenti says things like fire hose, shovels and pickups fitted with large water tanks are key to stopping fires from spreading.

The number of wildfires varies from year-to-year in Delaware and mostly occur in the early spring and late fall.

To receive the funding, the grants have to be matched dollar for dollar by a volunteer fire company.

Applications are due May 1.
