Delaware State Parks announces record numbers of campers

Delaware State Parks revealed 2015 was its best for camping, boasting a record number of campers and cabin guests.

Camping at Delaware State Parks was up 19% from the 2014. State Parks Director Ray Bivens credited that spike, in part, to the increased number of utility hookups at campsites.

“So you have water, electric and sewer right in your campsite. Folks who have these larger campers, it’s kind of a pain to have to go to a dump station or anything like that,” Bivens said.

The department has also seen a push by tent campers, too. Bivens said they use the  electric hookups to charge phones and other devices.

Another draw has been the renovation of the North Inlet campground at Delaware Seashore State Park, Bivens said.

Even though they are just about halfway into 2016, officials at the Delaware State Parks are optimistic about attendance going into the busy summer season.

In fact, the department announced there’s not an open spot for reservation this Memorial Day weekend.
