Delaware suing to block Aetna, Humana merger

Delaware Public Media

Delaware is joining eight other states and federal officials to block the merger of two of the country’s largest health insurers.

Attorney General Matt Denn (D) argues that if the $37 billion deal between Aetna and Humana goes through, prices will go up due to reduced competition.

Both companies offer Medicare Advantage plans in Kent and New Castle counties, which would limit choice for customers should they merge.

In a press release, Aetna argues their insurance plans will actually cost less and they will offer more Medicare options across the country.

The U.S. Department of Justice and other states are also suing to block a separate, $54 billion merger between insurance giants Anthem and Cigna.
