Delaware victims in Western Union scam settlement can apply for reimbursement

Delaware Public Media

Delawareans who were tricked into sending payments to scammers while using Western Union can now apply for reimbursement. It’s the result of a January settlement between Western Union and 49 states plus the District of Columbia.

The Colorado-based money services business forfeited $586 million, admitting violation of The Bank Secrecy Act and anti-fraud statutes. This settlement was reached after an investigation into complaints from consumers who used the wire service to send money to third parties and got scammed.

Western Union is also required to develop an anti-fraud program.

More than 650,000 people across the country have come out as victims already.

The Delaware Department of Justice is urging Delawareans who believe they are eligible for reimbursement to visit westernunionremission.com. The state received more than $43,000 from the settlement for its Consumer Protection fund.
