Delawareans struggle to contact relatives in Puerto Rico

In the wake of Hurricane Maria, the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico is recovering from almost total devastation.

Sergio Cuadreado is an IT specialist living in Wilmington. His parents were born in Puerto Rico, and he has family members still living on the island. He has been unable to contact them.

“The cell towers that we were trying to (use to) communicate with our families—for a period of over six days at this point—we have not been able to reach, because out of the 1600 towers that they had, they’re only down to 300, so 1300 have already been wiped out,” said Cuadreado.

Cuadreado, along with other members of his community, are trying to collect donations to send to Puerto Rico relief efforts, but there are some challenges as civilians are not allowed to go to the island right now.

“Even if we go there, where will we stay? There’s not a place to rent a vehicle; there’s not a place to stay. Pretty much the whole entire island has been wiped out. So, we’re trying to make accommodations with anyone who may have a contact with the shipping departments,” said Cuadreado.

Cuadreado is not looking for the donation of funds, but supplies like bottled water, non-perishable food items or generators for Puerto Rico Hurricane relief.
