A new partnership is underway between the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) and Project SEARCH; a high school transition program that works worldwide.
DelDOT ADA Title II Coordinator Todd Webb says Project SEARCH works with students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities:
“The main goal of this program is to teach these interns job skills that they can then take and to gain meaningful employment. I mean that’s the whole goal of this program. So here at DelDOT we have multiple intern locations throughout all the different divisions throughout DelDOT. And the students will be at these locations for 10 weeks where they learn the job skills.”
The intent of the rotation is to allow students to experience a variety of DelDOT job duties. Participating students will be in the program for a full school year.
The program is made possible through a partnership between DelDOT, Autism Delaware, Community Integrated Services, the Caesar Rodney School District, the Department of Labor and Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services.
"DelDOT is also very excited to be the first public agency (in Delaware) to participate in what we see as a very valuable program and hope that the other state agencies will participate in the future." said DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan in a statement.
