DelDOT suspends temporary lane closures ahead of July 4th

Delaware Public Media
Delaware’s Department of Transportation plans to do what it can to ease traffic congestion over the 4th of July holiday this week. ";

If you are hitting the road for the July 4th holiday, you’ll have one less thing to worry about on your drive.

Delaware’s Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane closures over the long 4th of July holiday.

DelDOT community relations director C.R. McLeod says the first week of July and the 4th of July holiday is what his agency considers the beginning of the vacation season.

And that’s when First State roads start seeing the highest traffic volume.

“So beginning Tuesday, we suspend temporary lane closures for projects such as paving and sidewalk work that create additional delays on our roads. We know that there’s going to be a lot of people out, either travelling in State or out-of-State as well, so we want to make sure that people can move about as freely as possible,” McLeod said.

McLeod says DelDOT will start the planned lane closure  at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and leave them in place until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4th.

McLeod still encourages everyone to download DelDOT’s mobile app to keep tabs on holiday traffic conditions so they can adjust their routes or travel times:

“We encourage folks to visit our website, or use our free DelDOT app. Before heading out, you can get an idea of what real-time traffic conditions are. We have more than 160 traffic cameras, so you can look to see where you’re going and see what you’re expecting,” said McLeod.

He says motorists should still stay alert and exercise caution as they navigate the anticipated heavy holiday traffic.
