Democrat Jack Bucchioni launches campaign for State House seat

Delaware Public Media

A retired business executive and educator is tossing his hat into the ring for the District 20 seat in the state House of Representatives.

66-year-old Democrat Jack Bucchioni is seeking to unseat incumbent Republican State Representative Steve Smyk.

Bucchioni lives in Milton and says the current political climate is one reason he decided to run in District 20, which includes the Milton, Lewes and Harbeson areas of Sussex County.

“This last year has been very interesting. I’ve never seen anything like it in politics. So, I was recently retired and with all the changes that are really happening since the new administration came in, I’ve been motivated to really get involved,” said Bucchioni.

Bucchioni says friends and neighbors also motivated him to run.

Bucchioni says if he’s elected, he’ll focus on quality of life issues currently affecting many district residents. Bucchioni adds he also wants to bring career industry jobs to Sussex to help boost the service industry jobs that are there now.

“Number one is to bring jobs. And when I say jobs, I’m talking about career jobs. The industry in southern Delaware and certainly in District 20 is a lot of tourists, retail and folks coming in for vacations and so on. What we need to do is, we need to shift that more along the lines of career jobs,” said Bucchioni.

Smyk has held the 20th District seat since 2012.
