DNREC fines Sunoco $750,000

DNREC

Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is handing Sunoco Partners Marketing and Terminals $750,000 in fines for unpermitted emissions the state claims polluted air quality.

DNREC Secretary Shawn Garvinissued the penalty to Sunoco Friday, citing the company for combusting gas from a flare without a permit at its Claymont site, next to its Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania facility.

DNREC found a modified Sunoco flare increased emissions - and the company failed to tell the state about the changes it had made in using the flare.

DNREC is ordering Sunoco to pay $150,000 of the total $750,000 for an environmental improvement project that will help officials place continuous air quality monitors around the state.

According to the order, Sunoco must stop operating the emergency flare by March 31, 2019, or the company will face additional penalties.
