Dover Downs announces layoffs, table game hour reductions

Delaware Public Media

Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment announced a new round of layoffs Thursday.  It will also no longer run late-night table games during the workweek.

The casino dropped 10 employees in the first quarter of this year.  That comes on the heels of cutting 21 positions through attrition in 2014 when it posted a $706,000 loss for the year.

Beginning May 18, table game operations will shut down between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

The company announced the move along with its first quarter earnings, which dropped another $352,000. That’s a less severe blow than the first quarter in 2014 where Dover Downs lost about $1 million.

Gaming revenue was down 2.5 percent compared to the same time last year. Occupancy rates at the hotel were also down slightly.

State lawmakers are still mulling a new package to reduce table game rates and bankroll marketing efforts, but it’s been stalled in committee since January.
