A holiday event at the Schwartz Center in Dover is promoting the arts in the First State and raising money for the homeless.

The event, dubbed A Winter Gala, features live music, comedy acts and dancing, all while collecting nonperishable food and clothes for a statewide homeless initiative called Code Backpack.

Miss Wilmington 2017 Rebecca Gasperetti launched Code Backpack and helped organize the gala.

"The performing arts can be our outlet (for) raising awareness for homelessness and other causes, of course. My goal is to combine the performing arts not only entertain our community, but to also raise awareness," Gasperetti said.

A portion event’s proceeds will go to the statewide homeless advocacy group Code Purple, which helps find housing for those in need when the temperature drops below freezing.

"Artists from across the state of Delaware will be performing and sharing their talents for a great cause," Gasperetti said.

The event starts Dec. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Schwartz Center for the Arts.

Delaware Public Media' s arts coverage is made possible, in part, by support from theDelaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
