Dover officials examine failure at wastewater pump station

A Dover wastewater pump station failed Monday, prompting officials to look into what happened.

Officials don’t yet know what caused all six pumps at Pump Station 7 - the city’s largest pump station - to fail on Monday, but Dover's Public Affairs and Emergency Management Coordinator Kay Sass says if it’s not fixed, things could get messy.

"We would have a sewage mess in homes and the street," Sass said. "It's not something you want to not fix. It's absolutely a priority of all of ours."

Pump Station 7 is near Home Depot and Acme. The scope of its line runs through Route 13 to the other side of Leipsic, out and around Leipsic and up Route 13 to the Delaware State Police, Sass said. The line also crosses over to Delaware State University.

Sass says the city is running a bypass pump to keep the flow going. Personnel pulled old pumps and are replacing them. Contractors are making sure the sewage stays down.

At least 20 personnel are working to fix the issue at the pump station, she said.

"We're doing everything we can, we brought in contractors, we were on it right away, and we're doing everything we need to do to be compliant environmentally," Sass said.

Personnel checked in with businesses to see if they had been affected. Shucker's Pier 13 Restaurant on Route 13 reportedly had a sewage problem Monday when the pump station failed.

Delaware Public Media couldn't reach Shucker's for comment at this time.
