Down goes the Twin Capes

Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control

The retired M/V Twin Capes was sunk Friday to become part an artificial reef in the Atlantic Ocean.

The ferry was christened 43 years ago in the Delaware Bay and made thousands of trips back and forth between its namesakes Cape Henlopen, Delaware and Cape May, New Jersey before being retired.

It joins several other vessels at the bottom of the ocean expanding the Del-Jersey-Land Inshore artificial reef—a habitat for fish and a destination for scuba divers.

The Twin Capes went down at 11:55 a.m. and the sinking was carried out by Virginia-based marine contractor Colleen Marine.

Delaware state officials say the vessel may be the best addition yet to the reef, thanks to a 1980’s retrofit that included new decks, lounges and pilot houses.

They expect these additions will attract tunas, sharks, and seasonally even barracudas.
