DUI checkpoints planned statewide Saturday night

Delaware Office of Highway Safety

You may want to think twice before getting behind the wheel this Halloween weekend if you’ve been drinking.

Delaware’s Office of Highway Safety is holding five DUI checkpoints around the state this Saturday night.

More than 100 state and local police officers will be manning the checkpoints in Wilmington, Bear, Dover, Rehoboth Beach and Seaford.

The specific locations, however, are still a secret.

“The checkpoint locations all stem from data where there were more crashes in previous months or years,” according to Lisa Flowers of the Office of Highway Safety, which is coordinating the checkpoints.

She said there are two purposes for the coordinated statewide checkpoints. The first is to deter people from drinking and driving. The other is to catch drunk drivers.

Officers will also be checking for outdated registration, seatbelt violations and other possible offenses.

This will be the Office of Highway Safety’s third statewide DUI checkpoint in collaboration with state and local law enforcement this year. The past two efforts averaged 14 arrests per night.

There have been 34 DUI-related deaths in Delaware so far this year, which is down from 62 deaths at this time last year.
