Efforts in Delaware to feed those in need

Food Bank of Delaware

There are several organizations in the First State making sure the people struggling to make ends meat will have a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving.

The Food Bank of Delaware has collected more than 77,000 pounds of food this holiday season and they expect to have 150,000 by Christmas. Food bank spokeswoman Kim Turner says the state handed out 500 meal-boxes to families in need last week.

“Each family who participated received a meal box filled with all of your traditional thanksgiving staples. They received a desert, a turkey, and also a turkey pan, and also some eggs and produce,” said Turner.

The Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington is also handing out food boxes, and will host a free Turkey Dinner tomorrow afternoon. Reverend Tom Laymon is President of the group. He says he is expecting about a thousand people for the meal.

“This is not just providing food, but providing fellowship to folks. Our great thanksgiving banquet as well as our great thanksgiving food outreach is the attempt to communicate to folks there are people who love them and care for them,” said Laymon.

Laymon says The Sunday Breakfast Mission has handed out more than 700 turkeys so far.

The News Journal reports, Nor Enterprises handed out more than 5,000 turkeys Tuesday at Boys and Girls clubs across the state. Many more organizations are hosting food drives and community Thanksgiving dinners.

More than twelve percent of Delawareans are food insecure according to FeedingAmerica.org.
