Eighth case of Zika confirmed in Delaware

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Delaware Division of Public Health has confirmed the state’s eighth case of the Zika Virus.

A New Castle County man recently tested positive for Zika, a virus primarily spread through mosquitos, after returning home from an overseas trip. Like the state's other seven cases, it's been determined he contracted the disease through a mosquito while traveling.

The Zika Virus causes a mild illness and is not life threatening. It has been linked to birth defects when contracted through pregnant women.

According to the state's Division of Public Health, 127 individuals have been tested for Zika in the First State. There have been 110 negative results and eight positive results. Seven test results are pending. In two cases involving pregnant women, the results were inconclusive and state officials were unable to determine if they have the virus.

The Division of Public Health also announced it is now offering Zika prevention kits to pregnant women. These kits are equipped with mosquito repellent, thermometers, condoms and brochures.
