First State reports first flu-related death of season

Delaware Public Media

Delaware has its first flu-related death of the 2015-2016 flu season.

The Division of Public Health (DPH) reports the state’s first flu death of the season is an 88-year-old man.  The New Castle County resident - who also had other underlying health conditions - died on March 14.

The death comes on the heels of a significant increase in flu activity throughout Delaware.  Just last week, there were 411 confirmed flu cases reported,  up from 197 cases the week before.

There have been 828 lab-confirmed flu cases in the First State during the current flu season.  Delaware saw 2,390confirmed cases and 28 flu-related deaths for the 2014-2015 flu season.

Still, DPH officials encourage anyone, 6 months of age and older, who has not yet been vaccinated against the flu to do so.
