First State Republicans return from national convention focused on the economy

Delaware Public Media

Delegates from Delaware are returning from the Republican National Convention with a a singular mission: defeating Hillary Clinton in November.

The Delaware delegation is united behind presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate Mike Pence because of their focus on the economy.

Richard Foreston is one of 16 delegates from Delaware who who went to the party convention in Cleveland. He says the voters have spoken. And it’s time to rally behind Trump.

“Donald Trump was not my first choice nor was he my last choice. But he’s the choice of the party and I believe in what the party is trying to do, particularly when it comes to the economy and jobs. And if that’s what I believe in I’m going to support Donald Trump,” said Foreston.

Foreston adds that he also especially likes Pence’s economic track record as governor of Indiana.

“The record in Indiana is exactly the record that we would love to have in Delaware. They’ve been cutting taxes every year but their employment is up. Think about how much better things would be in Delaware if we could say that about Delaware as well,” he said.

There are important issues hanging in the balance this election: the makeup of the Supreme Court. How to deal with ISIS. Racism. But none of these are as important as the economy, if you ask Foreston. And he said the Republican Party is focused on that like a laser beam.

Foreston also criticized Senator Ted Cruz, a Trump primary rival, for not endorsing Trump this week.
