Flu cases spiking in Delaware

Delaware Public Media

This recent bout of warm weather in the First State doesn’t seem to be slowing the spread of the flu virus.

The state saw 385 lab confirmed cases of influenza last week (February 12-18), which is a 60 percent jump from238 casesthe week before

“Right now flu is widespread in the state. I would consider the numbers we have now quite significant,” said Dr. Awele Maduka Ezeh, medical director for Delaware’s Division of Public Health.

Flu season typically peaks this time of year, although Maduka Ezeh said it’s too early to tell if we’ve hit the peak or not.

And don’t expect the warm weather to cut your chances of getting the flu. Maduka Ezeh said there’s no clear research linking temperature and transmission of the virus.

So far this year the state has seen nearly 1,300 cases of the flu.

Last year at this time there were only 58 confirmed cases of the flu, although last year’s flu season didn’t spike until March.
