Food Bank of Delaware gears up to deliver holiday cheer

2500 Delaware families in need will receive Thanksgiving food baskets on Friday.

The Food Bank of Delaware has collected money, frozen turkeys and other items for their annual “Thanksgiving For All” food drive.

Kim Turner, spokesperson for the Delaware Food Bank says First State charities that work with the nonprofit group will be delivering the holiday baskets.

“They’ll come to our facility, we’ll load up the boxes into their cars and then they’ll distribute them directly to their families in need,” she says. “In addition to that we have organizations who are members of the food bank, so those organizations will also be coming in to pick up canned goods, stuffing, mashed potatoes and turkeys and whatever else they need.”

Turner says holiday food drives are an easy sell but the need to stock the food bank’s pantries happens year round.

“The reality is people who are in need at Thanksgiving are in need throughout the year,” she notes. “We have 122,000 plus food insecure Delawareans who are struggling throughout the year so we like to remind people that once the holidays are over, the need still exists.”

Turner adds that the organization is always looking for help. You can volunteer your time or donate to the Food Bank by visiting F-B-D-dot-org. Those with food assistance needs can contact the Delaware Helpline by dialing 2-1-1.
