Food donations could wipe out library fines

Delaware Public Media

Library patrons in New Castle County have a chance to celebrate the holidays by donating food and getting a little back for their generosity. The libraries are granting amnesty on fines up to $25 in exchange for nonperishable food items.

New Castle County Department of Community Services General Manager Sophia Hanson said the program helps support AFSCME Local Union 459's holiday food drive.

"It’s certainly a meaningful contribution that’s felt by residents of New Castle County, whether it’s through the fine waiving or receiving of donated food," she said.

Hanson said around 1,400 library cardholders donated food during last year’s drive, when the libraries waived nearly $7,700 in fines.

She said donations are encouraged, but not necessary to qualify for amnesty. The drive lasts through Dec. 18.
