Fourth of July travel numbers could set records

Delaware Public Media

More Delawareans are projected to hit the roads and take to the skies this Independence Day weekend than ever before.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, travel could be up nearly 4 percent with almost 122,000  travelers.

Ken Grant, with AAA Mid-Atlantic, said that would be a record. "That’s the fourth year we’ve seen a steady increase in Fourth of July travel."

National numbers could set records, too.

"We’re looking at 44 million people traveling more than 50 miles," Grant said. That would be a increase of nearly three percent.

Grant said he thinks the record numbers could be attributed to cheaper than expected gas, a decent economy and a five day weekend for many travelers.

He added the increase in travelers could mean traffic jams on First State roadways. So People should be prepared to back their patience along with their bags
