GOP hopefuls are wasting no time in kicking off their 2016 campaigns – two of which are challenging long entrenched senate Democrats.
Newark police officer James Spadola is looking to knock off Sen. Harris McDowell from North Wilmington.
McDowell is one of the most powerful state lawmakers, co-chairing the budget writing Joint Finance Committee and serving in the senate since 1976. He’s also been elected majority whip and majority leader at times during his tenure.
New Castle County gun dealer Carl Pace will also take on Sen. Bruce Ennis (D-Smyrna), who was first elected in 1982 to the state House of Representatives before moving to the senate in 2007.
Ennis’s 14th Senate District is one of the largest geographically, bordering the southeastern edge of the C&D Canal, stretching to Delaware’s western border and down to Dover’s city limits.
If both Pace and Spadola win, it would transfer control of the senate to Republicans – something not seen in decades.
Delaware’s General Election is set for Nov. 8.
