A funeral is planned for Saturday for a state historian and former Delaware State Senate majority leader who recently passed away.

Roger Martin was 83-years-old when he died last Thursday.

According to the Delaware State News, the Democrat was first elected to a first term in the State Senate in 1972. Representing Newark, Martin was elected majority leader in 1977 and 1978 and again in 1994.

In addition to serving in the Legislature, Martin wrote nine books on the First State’s history. His last book, an update to one first published in 1984 - was titled “A History of Delaware through its Governors” - and was released in December 2015; it includes every governor through the Ruth Ann Minner era.

A funeral service for Martin is planned for Saturday at Daniels and Hutchison Funeral Home in Middletown. Friends can pay their respects from 10 a.m. to noon; burial with military honors will follow at the Old Drawyers Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Heritage Commission or to the Delaware Archives.

Governor Carney has ordered the flags at state buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff beginning Friday, November 3 through Monday, November 6 to honor Martin and his service to Delaware.
