Gas prices continue to rise as January ends

Delaware Public Media

First State motorists aren’t seeing any relief at the gas pump this month.

AAA Mid-Atlantic reports the average cost of a gallon of regular statewide stands at $2.51.  That’s up 3 cents from a week ago and 8 cents since the start of the month.

AAA officials say that’s unusual for this time of year – noting that since 2014 prices have usually fallen in January – as much as 20 cents.

They note that could be an indication we’ll see higher prices throughout 2018.

Delaware drivers do have it better than their counterparts across the region.  A gallon of regular in the Philadelphia area averages $2.83, while its $2.63 in South Jersey and $2.60 in Maryland.

And you can still find a few spots with cheaper prices locally.  Delawaregasprices.com reports a half dozen stations statewide are charging $2.42 or less.

AAA says the national average currently sits at $2.58.
