Gas prices jump following 4th of July weekend

Delaware Public Media

Delaware drivers are digging deeper into their wallets when they fill up their gas tanks.

AAA Mid-Atlantic reports the average cost of a gallon of regular in Delaware rose six cents over the past week– from $2.14 to $2.20.

But that’s still nine cents less than it was a month ago

And Delawaregasprices.com reports there’s over a dozen stations up and down the state charging $2.09 or less.

Prices were a bit cheaper a year ago when the average for a gallon of regular in Delaware stood at $2.12.

The bump in price comes a week after the national average hit a new low for the year - $2.23.   This week the national average sits at $2.26.

But AAA doesn’t foresee this week’s increase turning into a trend.  It says the uptick can be attributed to increased demand over the 4th of July holiday – and as that subsides, refineries continue to produce more gasoline than the market needs.
