Gas prices spike in First State

Delaware Public Media

Delaware drivers saw gas prices spike last week.

AAA Mid-Atlantic reports the average cost of a gallon of regular jumped nine cents over the past seven days – from $2.28 to $2.37.

And Delawaregasprices.com reports there’s only a dozen stations charging $2.23 or less – mainly in Dover, Elsmere and New Castle.

It’s a significant difference from a year ago when the average price in Delaware more than 30 cents lower– sitting at $2.01.

AAA officials says more people are driving as the weather gets warmer.  That increase in demand paired with the final switchover to summer-blend gasoline and rising crude oil prices is fueling the price spike in recent weeks.

The national average currently sits at $2.41 – up two cents from last week.  It’s at it highest mark in 19 months.
