Gas prices tick up ahead of summer driving season

Delaware Public Media

Prices at the pump are on their way up again as the Memorial Day weekend approaches.

After several weeks of declining prices, AAA Mid-Atlantic reports the average cost of a gallon of regular in the First State was up three cents over the past seven days – from $2.22 to $2.25.

There are still some pockets of lower prices.  Delawaregasprices.com reports there’s nine stations charging $2.14 or less – mainly in the Elsmere, New Castle and Newark areas.

Prices as the week begins are in line with what they were a year ago when the average price in Delaware was $2.24.

AAA officials says demand associated with the beginning of the summer driving season push prices higher in the coming weeks – but not significantly.

The national average currently sits at $2.36 –  up two cents from last week.  A year ago the national average was at $2.28.
