Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ 8) is throwing her support behind proposed domestic violence legislation in Delaware.
Giffords plans to address the state Senate in Dover Thursday, advocating for a bill that would prevent alleged domestic abusers from possessing a gun.
The legislation would force those accused of domestic violence and served with a restraining order to surrender any guns and ammunition to the police within 24 hours. Law enforcement could also charge a fee for storing someone’s property.
Those served also wouldn’t be able to buy a gun while the order is valid. It would also modify the current domestic violence law to include those dating or who have lived together in the past five years.
Anyone the subject of a restraining order under current Delaware law are already required to turn over any firearms.
Giffords’ husband Mark Kelly lobbied the state legislature two years ago to stiffen Delaware’s gun control laws to strengthen background checks, among others.
She survived an attempted assassination in 2011 in Arizona where she was shot in the head and has since advocated for gun control reform at the state and federal level.
