Gov. Carney refuses to send Delaware Nat'l Guard to southwest border

Delaware Public Media

Gov. John Carney is pushing back against the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy that’s separating children from their parents at the U.S. - Mexico border.

Carney said he received a request Tuesday to send Delaware National Guard troops to assist at the southwest border. But he said he is rejecting the plea because of policy, which he called inhumane.

“I just can’t support a policy of separating children from their mothers and fathers at the border," he told reporters Tuesday afternoon. "And that is part of this overall effort and so this is a voluntary request that came out and I decided as part of my role here that we shouldn’t participant in that.”

He added that he would reconsider if President Trump revokes the policy and urged the President and Congress to fix the nation’s immigration system.

"I served in Congress, and I watched for six years as that body failed to pass a comprehensive immigration policy that would secure our borders in a way that upholds the values of this great country. Congress and the President need to step up and fix the mess that our immigration system has become,” Carney said in a statement released earlier Tuesday.

Delaware Attorney General Matt Denn is also decrying the policy. He joined 20 state Attorneys-General in sending a letter to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen demanding practice of separating children and parents stop. The AGs call the policy inhumane, draconian and contrary to American values.
