Gov. Carney says Delaware opposed to offshore drilling

Bureau of Ocean Energy Management

President Donald Trump's administration is collecting public comments about possible offshore oil and gas drilling around the U-S.

Gov. John Carney is telling them Delaware opposes future exploration or drilling off the First State’s coast.

Trump ordered a review of offshore drilling restrictions earlier this year. He campaigned on reversing protections approved by former President Barack Obama.

If the restrictions are lifted, the move could open large areas of the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Oceans to oil and gas drilling.

In a letter to U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, Carney said he’s worried about the potential impact that drilling and seismic surveys in the Atlantic could have on Delaware. He noted the state relies on its coastal areas for nearly $7 billion in economic activity and more than 60,000 jobs.

Carney also said expanding offshore drilling will increase carbon emissions and worsen climate change.
