Gov. Markell announces export initiatives to aid Delaware businesses

Delaware Public Media

Gov. Jack Markell (D-Delaware) discussed measures his administration is taking to assist First State companies looking to do business abroad during an address to the State Chamber of Commerce Tuesday.

Companies that compete globally are shown to do 25% more business than domestic-only firms – and Markell is hoping his new Strategic Export Plan stimulates more exports to countries like Mexico, Canada, South Korea and Germany – to leverage their buying potential.

The plan provides export counseling and financial assistance – while connecting businesses with online communities – facilitating the easy exchange of information on operating in a global marketplace.

Markell said companies and the state can both benefit from expanding business outside of the country’s borders.

“When companies find new customers around the world, it’s an opportunity for them to sell more, to drive up their revenues and to put more people to work," said Markell. "And we're in the business here of doing everything we can so that more Delaware businesses can put more people to work, and we believe that increasing exports is a great way to do that.”

The governor is also launching the online platform Global Delaware  –  another resource connecting companies here – especially small and medium sized businesses - with those abroad.

“We know that there is a lot of opportunity for Delaware businesses to grow, to put people to work by selling more of their goods and services around the world, and we aim to help them do exactly that,”said Markell.

Global Delaware focuses on investments in Delaware, expanding markets and forming corporations within the state. It will also provide links to additional resources while using social media to engage a wider global community and share stories of success.
