Gov. Jack Markell is reinforcing how building up Delaware's infrastructure will help shore up its economy in his weekly message.
That's as the state breaks ground on the Route 301 toll road extension.
"Today, the road is too often cited for rush hour bottlenecks and a high frequency of car crashes, and we are not tapping into the full economic potential of that part of New Castle County," Markell says. "I’m grateful for the terrific support of our Congressional delegation and the Federal Highway Administration, who have ensured we will have the resources for a new 301. "
He notes the state's contribution to the project is part of $400 million in investment in Delaware roads and bridges over the next six years.
And he says clearing up congestion in the heavily-traveled region between Middletown and the C&D canal will help create jobs and bring new employers to the area.

Supporting a strong economy and a high quality of life for Delawareans requires a safe and efficient transportation system. That’s why, with bipartisan leadership from the General Assembly, I’m proud we have increased investments in roads and bridges by nearly $400 million over the next six years. That means creating tens of thousands of jobs, fewer accidents, and less congestion.
And in addition to construction happening with those funds, we’re celebrating another important milestone this week for our infrastructure with the groundbreaking for the new US Route 301. Today, the road is too often cited for rush hour bottlenecks and a high frequency of car crashes, and we are not tapping into the full economic potential of that part of New Castle County. I’m grateful for the terrific support of our Congressional delegation and the Federal Highway Administration, who have ensured we will have the resources for a new 301. This limited-access highway will mean a safer, faster and more efficient connection from the Maryland / Delaware line to Delaware Route 1 and I?95. And building the new road will support more than 7,000 jobs in construction and other industries. When it’s complete, regional traffic will have an improved alternative when traveling through our state and we will remove large volumes of traffic, especially heavy trucks, from key local roads. We’ll also support better connections to development projects throughout the area.
The expected economic impact from better infrastructure will mean thousands more job opportunities for Delawareans. Building and maintaining quality infrastructure creates a bridge to our shared prosperity. The new US 301 – and other projects like it – will keep our people safe, while helping to attract and retain employers and the strong workforce Delaware needs for the 21st century. That will keep Delaware moving forward.
