Kalmar Nyckel unable to visit Lewes this summer

Delaware Public Media

If you want to take a ride on Delaware’s Tall Ship, the Kalmar Nyckel, you’re going to have to travel to New Castle County this summer.

The Kalmar Nyckel is unable to visit Lewes this year and will head to other destinations instead.

“There has been some build-up of silt that has taken place and it has gotten to be so extensive that the ship actually can’t make it to the dock this year, unfortunately,” said Cathy Parsells, executive director of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation.

Parsells says it has worsened to the point that the water is too shallow for the Kalmar Nyckel to pull into port.

“We trying to find a solution. We’re working with the DRBA extensively. And we’ve also been talking to the State of Delaware, as well as Legislators about the situation, to see what we can do,” said Parsells.

She says the goal is to get funding and secure permits for dredging the Lewes dock, so the Tall Ship can return in 2019.

The Kalmar Nyckel is in Wilmington through July 5th.  It will also be in Historic Old New Castle in late August after stints in Provincetown on Cape Cod in Massachusetts and Kingston, NY along the Hudson River.
