Hockessin resident Kathy Beard is running to replace retiring State Rep. Joe Miro in the Delaware House.

It’s the Republican’s first campaign for elected office.

Beard said she’ll bring her business background to the House if she’s elected to the seat. She said the state should strengthen educational services to attract and retain employers.

She adds that Delaware can save money by restructuring the delivery of medical services. Beard works for a Belgian health care company.

“I would like for us to look at savings that can be accomplished through health care improvements," she said. "Specifically in the areas of preventive care and in the areas of the opioid crisis. What we’re spending there.”

Beard also touts her volunteer experience working with women in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. But she wants to make a greater impact by helping to create new statewide approaches to existing problems.

“So I would like to try to use policy to continue to improve lives for people here in Delaware,” she said.

Miro, a Pike Creek Valley Republican, has served in the Delaware House since 1998.
