Kent Co. and Dover Boys & Girls Club unveil new facility

Delaware Public Media

People in Central Delaware will get their first chance to look inside the new Kent County Recreational Center and Greater Dover Boys & Girls Club this week.

The new 75,000 square foot facility is a partnership between the county and the non-profit educational organization. It will feature educational and recreational programs for children between the ages of 3 and 18. Previous facilities provided similar services, but officials say an upgrade will make a difference.

“There was just such a need for this type of space for everybody involved, recreationally and also educationally.”” said Jacob Getty, executive director of the Greater Dover Boys & Girls Club. "We really needed something that was centrally located for everybody, that was going to be all-inclusive and give everybody the opportunity to access the best programs we have available for all these kids.”

The Boys & Girls Club facility will house classrooms for educational activities. The county recreation center will house various indoor courts and outdoor fields for recreational activities. The two will share a single entrance.

The joint-facility is off New Burton Road, just north of Wyoming town limits. It officially opens Monday, June 13.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the Boys & Girls Club facility is Wednesday. The county recreation center will have its ceremony Saturday morning. The public is invited to come tour the new facility after each ribbon cutting.
