Low gas prices fuel heavy holiday travel

Delaware Public Media

More than 100,000 Delawareans are expected to hit the skies and highways this Memorial Day Weekend. That’s more than a two percent increase from last year.

AAA released its holiday travel projections Wednesday and anticipates nearly 96,000 Delawareans to travel more than 50 miles by car this weekend. More than 7,000 Delawareans are expected to travel by air.

Low gas prices are fueling travel plans, according to AAA's Kathleen Miller.

“For today, the Delaware gas average is $2.24. And while that price has been climbing, it is 38 cents less than last year. So the lower gas prices are giving people a little more change in their pocket and maybe giving them the green light to get on the road," Miller said.

Airfares are also expected to be cheaper this year by more than 26 percent. A sunny forecast could also boost the number of people traveling this weekend.

It’s important to take precautions in heavy traffic weekends, according to AAA. You should check your tire pressure and turn signals, and leave for the airport earlier than usual.
